{"id":1078,"date":"2012-09-06T17:22:28","date_gmt":"2012-09-06T21:22:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shaviro.com\/Blog\/?p=1078"},"modified":"2012-09-06T17:22:28","modified_gmt":"2012-09-06T21:22:28","slug":"melancholia-and-film-open-access-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shaviro.com\/Blog\/?p=1078","title":{"rendered":"Melancholia; and film open access scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks the inauguration of <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/about\/\">REFRAME<\/a>, &#8220;an open access academic digital platform for the online practice, publication and curation of internationally produced research and scholarship&#8221; on film, media, and music. REFRAME is edited by Catherine Grant, of the School of Media, Film, and Music at the University of Sussex; she also runs the invaluable <a href=\"http:\/\/filmstudiesforfree.blogspot.com\">Film Studies for Free<\/a> blog.<\/p>\n<p>Among other things, REFRAME is publishing <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/sequence\/presenting-sequence\/\"><em>Sequence: Serial Studies in Media, Film, and Music<\/em><\/a>, a new, peer-reviewed open-access scholarly journal. <\/p>\n<p>And I am proud to say that the first issue of <em>Sequence<\/em> features an article of mine about Lars von Trier&#8217;s 2011 film <em>Melancholia<\/em>, entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/sequence1\/1-1-melancholia-or-the-romantic-anti-sublime\/\">&#8220;<em>Melancholia<\/em>, or the Romantic Anti-Sublime&#8221;<\/a>. This is the most sustained work I have done since my 2010 book <em>Post-Cinematic Affect<\/em>; it is about 18,000 words long  &#8212; which is too long for a conventional academic article, but too short for a book. I am thrilled, therefore, that it can now be published digitally, as the online format allows for more varied lengths than is possible with conventional print. I am also thrilled that this publication is open access: which is something that, I strongly believe, all academic work should be.
