Pullman Professor of English and Director of the Lesbian and Gay Studies Project at the University of Chicago.  She is author of <em>The Anatomy of National Fantasy:  Hawthorne, Utopia, and Everyday Life<\/em> (1991), <em>The Queen of America Goes to Washington City:  Essays on Sex and Citizenship<\/em> (1997), and the forthcoming <em>The Female Complaint:  the Unfinished Business of Sentimentality in American Culture<\/em> (2008).  She has also edited a number of volumes, including <em>Intimacy<\/em> (2000), <em>Our Monica, Ourselves<\/em> (2001), <em>Compassion:  The Culture and Politics of an Emotion<\/em> (2004), and the forthcoming <em>On the Case<\/em> (2007).
